Chapter Ten

Britannia awoke to a popping sound in the distance. She looked to the bed and found the older of the two boys watching her. When she rose to put her hand on the forehead of the smaller boy beside him, he flinched.

"I am not going to hurt you," Britannia said gently as she dipped a cloth in cold water, wrung it out, and placed it on the little boy's forehead. "Your brother is very sick. I have to get his temperature down and try to break up the congestion in his chest."

"He ain't gonna die is he?" the boy demanded.

"Not if I can help it," Britannia said. She put her hand out towards him and, although he flinched, the boy allowed her to feel his forehead. "You only have a small fever and that is good. My name is Doctor Britannia Montgomery. What is your name?"

"Billy Webster," the boy said finally.

"Billy, I need to remove your socks to check your feet and toes to make sure there are no signs of frostbite," Britannia explained. "What is your brother's name?"

"How'd you know he's my brother?" the boy demanded.

"Because you told Blackie he was," she answered. "He is the big man that brought you into the cabin. His name is Blackie Hawkins, although he has a very nice Irish name of Bran Seamus. Does your brother have a name?"

"Danny," the boy said, as he watched the woman unwrap his bandaged feet, wash them and check the sores on them. She smeared some salve on the sores and bandaged them again. "A woman can't be a doctor."

"So I have been told, over and over again," said Britannia with a smile. "I don't listen very well. I go right on being a doctor."

The back door opened and Blackie came in covered in snow. He stomped the snow off his boots while Britannia jumped up, grabbed a broom, and started sweeping snow off his coat and trousers, and then swept it back out the door.

He put his rifle down, and tossed three rabbits and two pheasants into the dry sink. "I figured we would need meat. That picnic basket will not sustain the four of us for long. The snow is starting up again, so the storm is not over yet."

Britannia's eyes widened at the dead animals. "I hope you know how to clean those, because I don't."

Blackie laughed. "I do, city girl. Can you cook them?"

"Maybe with a bit of help," Britannia answered truthfully. When he raised his eyebrows, her chin came up. "My mother had a cook, and I have always had a housekeeper who did the cooking. I can make a few things, though."

Blackie grinned. "I'll take care of it. I don't keep much here because, until recently, I wasn't coming here very often. There are some tinned goods in that cabinet, along with staples such as dried beans, flour, lard, and coffee. I will look around and see what else is here. Game is plentiful, so we won't starve."

Blackie found
